Neighbourhood guide

What it is like to live in Old North, London

Old North sits between downtown London and Western University, north of Oxford Street and west of Adelaide Street, with the Thames River forming its western and northern edges. It takes in three smaller neighbourhoods: St. George-Grosvenor, Bishop Hellmuth and Broughdale. It is one of London’s most admired residential areas, known for stately heritage homes, crooked old sidewalks and huge oak and maple trees, all a short trip from downtown.

Families, older adults, academics and students all share these streets. Parks are part of daily life. Gibbons Park has a pool, spray pad, tennis courts and a pedestrian bridge over the river, and Doidge Park is the neighbourhood’s classic tobogganing hill. St. Joseph’s Hospital sits inside the neighbourhood, and Western University and University Hospital are a short ride north. The Thames Valley Parkway follows the river through Gibbons Park to downtown and beyond.

There are trade offs. Everyday shopping clusters mainly at Richmond and Oxford and along Adelaide Street, rather than on every corner. Older homes often need mechanical updates. Inventory is limited because many owners stay for decades, so listings on the best streets can be few. Homes in the Bishop Hellmuth Heritage Conservation District, and individually designated homes, need City approval for many exterior changes.

    The birthplace of Western University

Huron College began at St. James and St. George Streets in 1863, and the university’s first home was the former Hellmuth Boys’ College, on the block now filled by Bishop Hellmuth’s heritage homes.

    Churchill planted a tree here

Thornwood at 329 St. George Street hosted Sir John A. Macdonald, the Prince of Wales and Winston Churchill, who planted a birch in the yard.

  • 03

    A quarry turned sledding hill

Doidge Park was once a gravel and limestone pit. For decades kids have tobogganed down its slopes, across from the hospital’s former emergency entrance, now an urgent care.
