Neighbourhood guide

What it is like to live in Argyle

Argyle is a large, established neighbourhood in east London, built mostly after the Second World War. It takes in Pottersburg, Nelson Park, Trafalgar Heights, the Hale Street District and the Gorhamclarke Triangle. Homes are mostly single detached, with some townhouses and small apartment buildings. Prices sit well below the London average, which makes it one of the city’s more practical places to buy a family home. Residents call themselves EOA, East of Adelaide, and the community association runs its own Santa Claus parade and Canada Day fireworks.

Parks are a real strength. Kiwanis Park follows Pottersburg Creek from Trafalgar Street to just south of Dundas, with a skateboard park, spray pad, sports fields and trails. East Lions Park holds the East Lions Community Centre, with an indoor pool, gym and artisans centre. Dundas Street East is lined with family run and national businesses, and CBC has reported its growing name as London’s Little India. Fanshawe College and the airport are both close by.

There are trade offs. City reports and CBC have described the Dundas corridor as unattractive and hard to walk, with poor lighting and sidewalks, and the local business association has paid for private security to deal with theft and vandalism. Royal LePage describes the area as car oriented, even though everyday errands are within walking distance. A city improvement plan for the corridor aims to change that over time.

    London to London, 1927

On September 7, 1927, two pilots left the Crumlin Road airfield chasing Carling’s $25,000 prize for the first flight to London, England. They vanished over the Atlantic, and the stamps printed for the flight became some of Canada’s rarest.

  • 02

A drive in under the mall

Argyle Mall stands on the site of the Skyway Drive-In, Ontario’s second drive in theatre, which ran from 1947 to 1955.

  • 03

Named by pottery and a sales ad

Pottersburg took its name from the Glass Brothers’ Pottery, while Argyle itself comes from an Argyle Park real estate advertisement from around 1914.
