Neighbourhood guide

What it is like to live in Carling Heights

Carling Heights, often just called Carling, sits in north central London, northeast of downtown. It takes its name from the Carling family, whose farm once covered this high ground. The streets are mostly wartime ranchers and postwar homes, smaller and set closer together than in many London neighbourhoods, which gives the area a close knit feel. The military has been part of daily life here since the 1880s, and Wolseley Barracks, a National Historic Site, still anchors the south end on Oxford Street East.

Recreation is the neighbourhood’s strong suit. The Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre on Elizabeth Street has a 25 metre, six lane indoor pool, a climbing wall and a gym, and runs the free Shaedon Sharpe Drop-In Basketball Program for local youth. McMahen Park has a skate park, basketball court, play structures, a baseball diamond and a community garden. Carling Arena and Park adds two ice surfaces, tennis and basketball courts and soccer fields, and North East Park has an outdoor swimming and wading pool.

Old East Village, the Western Fair District and downtown are all a short walk or bike ride away. There are trade offs. Many homes are small and older, and the neighbourhood mixes residential streets with commercial areas and an active military base. For buyers who want an affordable home close to the core, with a pool, an arena and parks within a few blocks, Carling Heights is worth a close look.
